Kids' Shoe Size Conversion Chart (0-7 Years)

US children's shoes from infancy to about age 7 are labelled with a 'C' suffix (4C, 8C, 13C) and run from roughly 100 mm to 195 mm in foot length. UK sizes for the same range are one number lower (US 8C is UK 7), and EU sizes run from 16 to 31. Korea and Japan again use foot length, which makes them the easiest reference: a 150 mm foot is simply KR 150 or JP 15.

Children's feet grow about 1 mm a month before age 3 and around 0.5 mm a month until age 7, so a shoe bought with 10 mm of room lasts three to six months. Measure while the child stands, and buy 10 to 12 mm longer than the foot; anything under 6 mm of room is too tight. Because sizing jumps by about 8 mm per US full size, avoid buying two sizes up 'to grow into'; loose shoes cause tripping and blisters.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the 'C' mean in US kids' shoe sizes?

C stands for child and covers sizes 0C to 13.5C, roughly newborn to age 7. After 13.5C the scale restarts at 1Y (youth). A 10C is about 165 mm, a 13C about 190 mm.

What size shoe does a 3-year-old typically wear?

Most 3-year-olds have a foot around 150 to 160 mm, which is US 8C to 9C, UK 7 to 8, EU 24 to 25, KR 150 to 160 mm or JP 15 to 16 cm. Measure rather than rely on age; a 20 mm spread is normal.

How much growing room should a child's shoe have?

10 to 12 mm between the longest toe and the shoe end. That is about one US full size. Check every two to three months by pressing the thumb at the toe box; if there is under 6 mm, it is time to size up.

Is a Korean 160 mm the same as a Japanese 16 cm?

Yes, identical. Both mean the shoe fits a foot up to about 160 mm. It corresponds to US 9C to 9.5C, UK 8.5, EU 25 to 26.
